A Kerala wedding is not an event — it is a journey. Come for both days if you can.
Malappuram is in the heart of Kerala's Malabar coast. The closest international airport is Calicut (Kozhikode) — about 1 hour away.
Best airport: Calicut International Airport (CCJ / Kozhikode) — ~1 hr to Malappuram
Alternative: Kochi International (COK) — ~3 hrs, more flights from Europe
From Germany: Connect via Dubai (Emirates/flydubai), Abu Dhabi (Etihad), or Doha (Qatar Airways)
Flight time: ~10–12 hrs with one stopover
Book well in advance — December is peak season in Kerala. Airlines: Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa + connection.
Search Flights →From CCJ Airport: ~1 hr by taxi (pre-book recommended). Approx ₹800–1200 (~€9–14).
From COK Airport: ~3 hrs by taxi or bus. Book a private car for comfort.
Within Malappuram: Auto-rickshaws, taxis, and Ola/Uber are all available.
Between venues: We recommend staying close to Malappuram town. Day 2 at Pottikkadavath House — transport details will follow in the guest briefing.
Tip: Download Ola or Rapido apps for easy local taxis.
e-Visa required for German (and most EU) passport holders.
Apply online: indianvisaonline.gov.in — Tourist e-Visa, usually processed in 3–5 business days.
Apply at least 4 weeks before travel to be safe.
Two airports serve Malappuram. All routes need one stopover — no direct flights from Europe to Kerala. Book early — December is peak season.
1 stopover, ~10–13 hrs total. All links open a pre-filtered Skyscanner search.
We recommend staying in or near Malappuram town. All options below are within easy reach of both venues.
One of Malappuram's finest — grand banquet hall, spacious rooms, exceptional Malabar cuisine. Perfect base for the wedding days.
Set along the serene Chaliyar River — a perfect blend of Kerala tradition and modern luxury. Spacious banquet halls and open-air terraces.
For those who want to blend the wedding trip with relaxation and Ayurvedic treatments. Close to Calicut Airport. Spa, pool, and lush gardens.
Contemporary facilities, well-appointed rooms, and a great location in Malappuram. Excellent value and friendly staff.
If you want to fly in and out easily, Kozhikode has a wide range of hotels. Good option for those arriving late or departing early.
December is peak tourist season in Kerala — cool, dry, beautiful. Book your hotel at least 3–4 months in advance. We'll share a group booking code shortly.
Click any pin to see what's there. The route flows north to south — wedding → wild forests → Christmas in Kochi → mountains → backwaters → southern tip.
You've flown across the world — so stay a while. Our suggestion: rent a car and driver and travel from the wild north to the very southern tip of India. Below is Johannes & Aparna's personal recommended route, with time estimates and notes on comfort, wildlife, food, and the festive Christmas season.
The best way to explore Kerala is by hiring a private car with a driver. Roads wind through mountains, forests and backwaters — a local driver knows every shortcut, restaurant and hidden stop. Price: ₹3,000–5,000/day (~€30–55) including driver, fuel and a basic AC car. For older guests and family, this is the comfortable, stress-free option.
Alternatively, self-drive rentals are available in Kochi (Zoomcar, Revv). The NH966 Malappuram–Kochi road and NH183 through the Western Ghats are well-paved and scenic. Driving tip: go slow, enjoy the view, and let the road surprise you.
For group travel: hire a tempo traveller (minivan, 8–12 seats) with driver — ₹5,000–7,000/day, perfect for families and older guests.
~2.5 hrs from Malappuram. Misty highland plateau at 900–2,100m. Coffee and tea estates, ancient Edakkal Caves, elephant corridors, and the warm Adivasi (tribal) communities. December is perfectly cool (16–22°C at night). Great comfort resorts like Vythiri Resort and Pepper County with spa, pool and forest views — perfect for older guests.
Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — one of India's most biodiverse zones, UNESCO-listed. Home to Indian elephants, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, Malabar giant squirrels, and 300+ bird species. The forest is alive — you feel it in your bones.
One of Kerala's least-visited and most pristine forests — a buffer zone of Silent Valley. Ancient shola rainforest, rare lion-tailed macaques, hornbills, and rivers so clean you can hear the stones. Ask your driver to take the Nilambur–Ooty road for a jaw-dropping forest drive.
One of the last undisturbed tropical evergreen rainforests in India. No roads, no lodges inside — guided treks with a forest ranger only. Book in advance through Kerala Forest Dept. A once-in-a-lifetime experience: the sound of the Kunthipuzha river through ancient trees, lion-tailed macaques, and mornings in the mist.
Book Ranger Trek →Palakkad Gap — the only natural mountain pass through the Western Ghats, used for centuries. Palakkad Fort (Tipu Sultan's fort), beautiful tank, and excellent Kerala meals. Nelyambadi is a tranquil stop between Wayanad and Palakkad with stunning views. Good mid-route rest point for older guests.
We strongly recommend at least one overnight in a forest lodge near Wayanad or Silent Valley. Wake up to birdsong at 5am, guided walks with a biologist-ranger, night safaris. Recommended: Jungle Retreat (Masinagudi, near Mudumalai), or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary forest camps. Book months ahead.
Fort Kochi is Kerala's Christmas heartland. The Santa Cruz Basilica (built 1503 by the Portuguese) and St. Francis Church (where Vasco da Gama was buried!) glow under thousands of lights. Midnight Mass on 24 Dec is deeply moving — people of all faiths attend. Streets lit with handmade star lanterns, carol choirs, spice-scented air. Truly unforgettable.
One of the most extraordinary streets in India: a Jewish Synagogue, Hindu Temple, and Mosque all within 200 metres — and they have coexisted for centuries. A living symbol of Kerala's unique religious harmony. The old Paradesi Synagogue (1568) is particularly beautiful. Nearby: Kathakali performances, spice warehouses, antique shops.
The iconic cheena vala — Chinese fishing nets at sunset on the Arabian Sea. Buy fresh catch right from the nets and take it to the restaurant next door to have it cooked. Price estimate: A full fresh fish meal for 2 costs ~₹400–800 (~€5–9). Paragon Restaurant and Old Harbour Hotel are beloved for European-friendly menus too.
Fort Kochi is very European in feel — Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial architecture, art galleries, boutique cafés serving espresso and croissants. Great for older guests who want comfort and familiarity. Try Kashi Art Café for a proper breakfast. The Kochi Biennale (December–February) fills the city with international contemporary art.
~4 hrs from Kochi. Rolling hills covered in tea plants as far as the eye can see. In December: 10–20°C at night — bring a light jacket. The mist rolls in at dawn, the views from hilltop resorts are otherworldly. Eucalyptus forests, small rivers, cardamom estates. Excellent comfort resorts: Windermere Estate, The Tall Trees. Also: Christmas midnight mass at CSI Christ Church Munnar — beautiful.
Home to the Nilgiri Tahr (rare mountain goat) and Anamudi — at 2,695m the highest peak in South India. The landscape is pure highland grassland above the clouds. Guided ranger walks are available. In December the tahr are very visible. Book entry permits in advance — quota is limited.
A vast forest reserve surrounding the Idamalayar reservoir. Dense evergreen rainforest, wild elephants, and the dramatic Idamalayar dam. Less visited than Periyar — more wild, more raw. Guided jungle treks can be arranged through the forest department. The road from Munnar to Idamalayar is one of the most spectacular drives in Kerala.
~2 hrs from Munnar. Morning boat safaris on the Periyar Lake — herds of elephants coming to drink at dawn. Spice garden walks, cardamom forest, bamboo rafting. Stay inside the reserve at Aranya Nivas or the KTDC Lake Palace (floating hotel on the lake — book very early!). Excellent for older guests — all activities are gentle and comfortable.
The iconic Kerala houseboat experience. Drift through a network of canals, lagoons and lakes lined with coconut palms. Your houseboat (kettuvallam) has bedrooms, a kitchen, and a sundeck. Wake at dawn to mist on the water, fishermen rowing past in silence. Price: ₹8,000–20,000/night for a 2-bedroom deluxe boat (~€90–220). Book through Kerala Tourism or directly.
Near Kottayam — a quieter, more luxurious backwater experience. The Kumarakom Lake Resort is one of India's finest heritage resorts, ideal for older guests wanting comfort. Morning canoe rides through narrow village canals. Migratory birds in the bird sanctuary (December is peak bird season). Price for resort: ₹15,000–30,000/night.
Kumarakom Lake Resort →A 2–3 hour manual canoe tour through the backwater villages — the real Kerala. Women washing clothes on stone steps, children swimming, men casting nets, the smell of coconut oil and spices from kitchen windows. Price: ₹300–500 per person. Far more memorable than a motorboat.
Karimeen (pearl spot fish) pollichathu — the dish of the backwaters. Grilled in banana leaf with coconut masala, eaten on a houseboat deck. Toddy (fermented coconut sap) is the local drink. Budget estimate: Full backwater day with food ~₹1,500–2,500 per person (~€17–28). Kerala's best food is here.
Kerala's most dramatic beach. Towering red laterite cliffs, a long beach below, and a clifftop strip of restaurants and Ayurvedic massage huts. Surfing lessons available (beginners welcome). In December: warm sea (~27°C), sunny, no crowds yet. Great for a 2-night base. Clafouti and Café del Mar on the cliff have excellent Continental and Kerala food — very comfortable for older guests.
~1 hr from Varkala. Three crescent bays, a lighthouse, and Kerala's most developed beach resort strip. Very comfortable for older family members — flat walking, good restaurants, excellent Ayurvedic spas. Turtle on the Beach and Leela Kovalam are top comfort options.
~2 hrs from Kovalam. The southernmost point of India — where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean meet. On a clear December day you can see Sri Lanka on the horizon (only 30km away). The sunrise AND sunset are visible from the same spot. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands on an island offshore. Deeply moving. An unmissable finale.
Two great options: celebrate New Year on Varkala or Kovalam beach with bonfire, drums and fireworks — or head back north to Fort Kochi's legendary Cochin Carnival (Dec 31), one of India's biggest New Year street festivals with parades, music, and effigies burned at midnight. Either way: extraordinary.
The southwest island archipelago of Kerala — 450km offshore in the Arabian Sea. 36 coral atolls, the clearest water in India, pristine reefs, and almost no tourists. Snorkelling and diving are extraordinary. Permit required (Indian permit for foreigners, available online). Fly from Kochi via Air India/LACCADIVES ~1.5 hrs. Bangaram Island Resort is the go-to. Best for independent younger guests — older guests may find it remote.
January 1st on a coral atoll with no light pollution — stars from horizon to horizon. Snorkel with sea turtles, manta rays and parrotfish at dawn. No roads, no cars, no noise — just the sound of the reef. One of the most special experiences on Earth. Prices: All-inclusive packages from ₹25,000–60,000/night (~€280–670). Book 4–6 months in advance.
If you want to extend the India adventure after Kerala — head north to Uttarakhand for Tungnath (world's highest Shiva temple, 3,680m) and Kedarnath in the Himalayas, or Auli for skiing in January. Fly from Kochi → Delhi → Dehradun. A completely different India — and unforgettable. Note: winter in the high Himalayas is cold and some temples close — check dates carefully.
Always book a private AC car with driver. ~₹3,000–5,000/day. Never rush. Plan 1 big drive per day max — roads are beautiful but slow.
Kerala has outstanding heritage resorts at very good prices. Budget ₹5,000–12,000/night for a comfortable 4★ room (~€55–135). Always book in advance in December.
Excellent meals for ₹200–500/person (~€2–6) at local restaurants. Chai on the road: ₹10–20. Fresh coconut water: ₹30–50. Continental food in Fort Kochi: ₹400–900/dish. Dosa breakfast: ₹50–100.
Coast: 26–32°C, sunny, low humidity. Perfect. Hills (Wayanad/Munnar): 10–20°C — bring a light jacket or fleece. Backwaters: 24–28°C, gentle breeze. Everywhere: dry season, minimal rain.
Carry rehydration salts, sunscreen, mosquito repellent (evenings). Bottled water always. Ayurvedic massage is available everywhere (₹500–1,500/hr) — great for tired joints and muscles after travel days.
Zoomcar / Revv in Kochi from ~₹1,500/day. International driving licence required. Roads in Kerala are good but require patience — chai stops are mandatory.
December in Kerala — perfect weather. 24–30°C, dry, sunny, very little rain. The best time of year.
Ceremony attire: Traditional Indian dress (saree, salwar, kurta) is wonderful and very welcome. Smart western dress also fine. Avoid black and white.
Colours: Go bright! Kerala loves rich colours — gold, red, green, yellow. Avoid all-white or all-black for the ceremony.
Footwear: You will remove shoes at the ceremony — bring comfortable, easy-on/off shoes.
The Sadya feast is vegetarian. Other meals will offer non-vegetarian Malabar dishes (fish, chicken, beef). Please let us know about any allergies.
Water: Drink only bottled or filtered water. Avoid ice in street food.
Stomach prep: Kerala food is spicy and delicious. Some travellers take probiotics before and during the trip.
Travel insurance with health cover is strongly recommended.
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). €1 ≈ ₹90 (check before travel). ATMs widely available; exchange at airport or use Wise/Revolut.
SIM card: Get a local Jio or Airtel SIM at the airport for cheap data. Bring your passport for registration.
Apps to download: Google Maps (offline Kerala), Ola/Rapido (taxis), Paytm (payments), WhatsApp (everyone uses it).
Remove shoes before entering homes and temples. Always.
Eat with your right hand — this is the tradition at Sadya. Spoons available too!
Touching elders' feet is a sign of deep respect — common in Kerala families. Don't be surprised if you see it.
Photography: Ask before photographing rituals closely. The family is very welcoming but please be mindful during sacred moments.
Please register by 1 September 2026. One form per person — takes 2 minutes.
